Tuning, Voicing and Regulation Explained
You know how people often use “piano tuning” as a catch-all term for any piano maintenance? It’s a common shortcut, but the reality is a bit more detailed. Understanding the difference between tuning, voicing, and regulation is the key to keeping your instrument playing and sounding its best.
As a team with over 20 years of experience here at our Harrogate showroom, we’ve helped countless people get the most from their pianos. Our qualified technician, James Whitmore, prepares every single instrument we sell.
We are authorised Yamaha and Kawai dealers, and we know that proper care is crucial for these finely crafted pianos.
So, let’s clarify what each of these essential services involves.
What is Piano Tuning?
Piano tuning is the most common and frequent service. It’s all about adjusting the tension of the approximately 230 strings inside the piano to bring them to the correct pitch. The goal is to ensure the notes are in harmony with one another.
Most pianos are tuned to a standard known as A440, where the A note above middle C vibrates at 440 cycles per second. We recommend tuning at least twice a year. This is because changes in humidity and temperature, especially with the central heating in many North Yorkshire homes, cause the piano’s soundboard and other wooden parts to expand and contract, altering the string tension.
What is Piano Voicing?
If tuning adjusts the pitch, voicing adjusts the piano’s tone or character. Think of it as shaping the personality of the sound. Is it bright and clear, or warm and mellow? Voicing is how we achieve that.
This process involves altering the density and shape of the felt hammers that strike the strings. A technician might use special needling tools to soften the felt for a gentler tone, or apply a hardening solution for a brighter, more brilliant sound. Voicing is a very personal adjustment, tailored to your preference and the acoustics of your room.
What is Piano Regulation?
Regulation focuses on the mechanical feel and response of the piano. It involves adjusting the thousands of moving parts that make up the piano’s action, which connects the keys to the hammers.
When a piano needs regulation, you might notice that the keys feel uneven, sluggish, or don’t repeat notes quickly. A proper regulation ensures every key responds uniformly, giving the pianist precise control over the instrument’s dynamics. This is a more intensive service, typically needed every 5 to 10 years depending on how much the piano is played.
